What’s the skinny?

Ok, I’m going to let the cat out of the bag. I’m starting a magazine, well an e-zine to be technically correct.

Each issue will feature a single creative in their creative space and run 10-15 pages. While you’ll probably see a few finished pieces the focus is to document their creative process and spaces.

Each issue will have an accompanying interview, a DIY craft tutorial and look book, it’s part The Selby part Design Sponge.

Today I got to shoot the first issue with Heather Moore of Skinny LaMinx at her studio and got to be a fly on the wall, well better than a fly because I received a cuppa tea and biscuits and there wasn’t a flyswatter in sight.

Above are a few off camera shots. I shot 180 frames, whittled it down to 87 and from that will probably feature 15-20 in the mag, whew.

I’m shooting, writing, designing and publishing it so bear with me, though I’m hoping to have the first issue out mid-August and then every two month thereafter.

Skinny LaMinx

Yesterday I popped into Heather Moore’s Skinny LaMinx store in Bree St. I’m dying to tell you why, but you’ll have to wait a little longer.

While I was there I took the opportunity to snap up a few Instagrams, somewhat ironic since as of last night they’ve been offline due to a power storm in Virginia…

Rather than show you the final products I thought I’d showcase a bit of her workspace, the patterns, fabrics and tools she uses to create her masterpieces.

Heather is always creating and regularly blogs about her now infamous ‘Making Friday’. You can find several of her tutorials on her blog.

If you are in Cape Town you’re in luck as this Thursday evening, July 5th, she’ll be hosting a ‘DIY Transfer night’ where participants can make their very own one-in-a-squillion mug with Heather’s assorted transfers. More details can be found here.
